In
the NBA, flopping means to fall down from little contact
with an attempt to draw a foul. This week, the NBA
made the announcement that fines
would be handed out next season to floppers. Finally, the
league gets it right.
Flopping is
one of the most disgusting developments over the past
few years. You see oversized humans screaming and flying
allover the court, from the slightest of contact. I hope
I don’t offend anybody, but I blame the European players
for this trend. The reason I give them the charge is
because they all have soccer backgrounds. If you have
ever seen a soccer game then you know flopping is all
they do.
Over the
past five years there’s been more Euro players in the
league and more flopping. You do the math. I like the
new flop rule because now we can get back to playing
basketball. Now we won’t see players falling out of
bounds after a low-post player lowers his shoulder. We
also are not going to see a player run under an airborne
player at the last second trying to take a bogus
charge.
Can you
imagine flopping going on in a pick-up basketball game?
You probably get sucker punched after the first attempt.
And anything goes in street ball. Assessing flopping in
the moment is going to be difficult. But, if the NBA
makes the fine 100k, I’m sure the players will flop
less.
